February 28, 2019 – Magic leap has announced its first round of grant recipients for its Independent Creator Program. More than 6,500 applicants applied, and Magic Leap went through submissions in order to evaluate them on the basis of originality, use case, technical capability, diversity, project scope, and feasibility.
The company stated that selected creators for this first round of grant awards come from a diverse set of backgrounds, team sizes, and locations, adding: “These teams inspired us with their future-shaping ideas and passion for what’s next. It’s our privilege to support their endeavors to smash through the boundaries of what’s possible with spatial computing. The’ve got some wide ranging use cases, too; from games and entertainment, to health & wellness, collaboration, productivity and more.”
Magic Leap announced that a total of 31 of companies were selected for the Independent Creator Program, but that an additional few others had chosen to remain unnamed and will instead announce themselves and their projects later.

Magic Leap stated that they are also awarding almost 200 additional applicants with Magic Leap One devices so they can continue developing their projects. Many of the above mentioned companies are expected to document their developments using the hashtags #MeetTheCreators and #IndieCreatorProgram on Twitter in the coming months.
Creators that missed this first round will get a second chance to have their ideas funded when submissions for round two of grant applications opens later in 2019, however Magic Leap has not specified and exact date at this time.
