July 1, 2020 – Vuzix Corporation, a supplier of smart glasses and augmented reality (AR) technology and products, has announced that Pixee Medical, a France-based medical company, in collaboration with Pr. Remy Nizard from Hopital Lariboisière in Paris, France, has performed a ‘Knee+’ total knee replacement surgery on June 24th using the Vuzix M400 AR Smart Glasses. The Vuzix M400 Smart Glasses provided real time navigation throughout the surgery displaying essential augmented reality information in the surgeon’s field of view.

According to Vuzix, Pixee anticipates the number of total knee replacement cases using the Knee+ technology will increase as the company apparently already has a list of surgeons interested in trying the innovation that utilizes the Vuzix M400 Smart Glasses. The combination is compact, easy to use, wireless and does not require disposables.

Pixee Medical expects to sign its first distribution agreements with implant manufacturers over the next few weeks, allowing the company’s solution, which is built around the Vuzix M400 Smart Glasses, to be promoted by them worldwide. Pixee Medical is pursuing and expecting FDA approval (510k) for Knee+ before the end of 2020.

“The team at Pixee Medical created an innovative path to bring the Vuzix M400 Smart Glasses into the operating room to perform knee replacement surgeries and we look forward to supporting the worldwide distribution of their innovative AR solution,” said Paul Travers, President and Chief Executive Officer at Vuzix.

The Pixee Medical company was founded in 2017 with a goal of creating high-performance, computer assisted surgical solutions using proprietary computer vision and artificial intelligence technologies, while remaining affordable in the challenging health system environment. The company states that its vision is to augment surgeons’ capabilities by creating new clinical pathways that are both efficient and effective, and that it aims to market its first surgical devices this year.
