April 10, 2020 – StarVR has announced that its ultra-wide field of view (FoV) headset, the StarVR One, is now available for purchase from select resellers.

First announced in 2018, the StarVR One is designed to achieve an almost 100% FoV when looking forward. The 210 degree horizontal, 130 degree vertical field of view helps to bring the experience ever closer to a user’s natural peripheral vision.

The headset’s custom made AMOLED displays are designed specifically for VR, and are able to  serve up 16 million sub-pixels at a refresh rate of 90 frames per second that can be fine-tuned for content. Coupled with StarVR’s custom designed Fresnel lenses, the headset is able to offer a clear visual experience within the entire field of view, according to the company.

StarVR One is seamlessly integrated with Tobii eye tracking technology, which helps to capture critical information about eye movements for gaze analysis. Eye tracking also enables IPD measurement on the device, which will automatically provide the best image for every new set of eyes.

The company also states on its website that while a focus on image quality and natural field of view were important, it has also ensured that the headset can be comfortably worn for extended sessions, and as a result the headset weighs 450 grams. A semi-rigid headband comes with StarVR’s proprietary one dial 3-way adjustment mechanism that lets users put the headset on quickly, and ensures a balanced comfortable fit. Furthermore, the StarVR One headset is lined with specially coated materials, making it easy to clean, and ready for multi-user environments.

StarVR states that for the development of new content or for upgrading existing VR experiences to the company’s premium wide FoV platform, this has been made easy with its SDK, which includes:

  • StarVR Driver with OpenVR runtime for easy integration with wide field of view;
  • Support for OpenGL, DirectX 11;
  • Optimized exclusively for Nvidia VRWorks;
  • Native support for Nvidia MVR and VRS, optimized for Nvidia Turing GPU;
  • Eye-tracking API through SDK and software IPD calibration;
  • Unity and Unreal Engine support through SteamVR.
