June 24, 2025 – DPVR, a provider of virtual and mixed reality (VR/MR) hardware and software solutions, has recently unveiled its Seated VR Cinema Solution at the 27th Shanghai International Film Festival.
The company presented its solution during the “International VR Screening Showcase” last week, showcasing two VR films: Tales of the Cinema and Italian Film History in the Waterfall.
Technology Behind the Experience
According to DPVR, its Seated VR Cinema Solution integrates three core technologies to support immersive film viewing:
- 4K display with wide field of view: The experience utilizs the company’s P1 Pro headset, which features a 4K ultra-high-definition display and a 120° field of view, aimed at providing detailed image quality.
- Real-time head tracking: A multi-camera tracking system is used to mirror head movements within virtual scenes, allowing for smooth visual transitions.
- Optimized rendering: The company’s rendering algorithms are designed to reduce latency and image tearing for a more comfortable viewing experience.
DPVR noted that the solution also includes a VR Content Management System that supports end-to-end encrypted streaming and synchronized playback across up to 40 headsets. Content delivery and playback are centrally managed, with a focus on securing intellectual property.
VR Storytelling in Focus
The Tales of the Cinema film uses spatial modeling to depict the evolution of a century-old theater. When viewers focus on particular seats, they trigger historical footage of past moviegoers who once sat there.
Italian Film History in the Waterfall combines montage-style editing with spatial media to integrate hundreds of Italian film clips into VR, all set within the Monte Gelato waterfall environment. As viewers move their heads, they can navigate between different timelines and narrative layers.
“Turning my head transported me back a hundred years – I felt like I was really sitting in history, watching films as people did back then. It’s far more authentic than traditional 3D cinema,” said one festival attendee.
Also commenting on the showcase, Derek Liu, COO of DPVR, said: “Our Seated VR Cinema Solution received strong feedback this year, with some critics describing it as ‘a technological revolution in cinematic language,’ highlighting the potential of VR to reshape both storytelling methods and audience experiences.”
