What’s the story?

The House of the Dead horror arcade series returns as a VR attraction, as SEGA Amusements International announces House of the Dead Reawakened ahead of the franchise’s 30th anniversary.

Why it matters

House of the Dead Reawakened brings back a popular classic arcade title, in arcades since 1997, and marks SEGA Amusements International’s “most ambitious VR title to date,” according to the company.

The bigger picture

From core horror fans to casual players, House of the Dead has a global following, with SEGA stating that “every instalment has proven a blockbuster earner for operators and a hit with players.”

November 5, 2026 – SEGA Amusements International, a developer and distributor of amusement arcade games, has recently announced House of the Dead Reawakened, which sees the House of the Dead arcade series return in an attraction experience format using virtual reality (VR) hardware.

According to SEGA, House of the Dead Reawakened is a two-player, attendant-free horror attraction that brings the House of the Dead arcade title to life once again. The House of the Dead series has been in arcades since 1997, and has included five amusement titles, plus spin-off movies and console games. This latest title arrives ahead of the franchise’s 30th anniversary next year.

“We’re proud to bring this quintessential horror game back to arcades in our most impressive build to date, all under one simple promise: ‘Dare to Experience’,” said Siraj Elkhawad, CEO of SEGA Amusements International. “With the franchise’s 30th anniversary just around the corner, this means a great deal to us. The House of the Dead brand has defined horror gaming for a generation, and reawakening it like this, for the very first time, felt like the only way to do that legacy justice.”

The arcade attraction is housed in a theme park-styled gothic manor cabinet with animated lighting, a working clock tower and a jump-scare reveal, while an 85-inch attract screen and dual 43-inch player viewing screens form the manor’s front door and side windows. Unreal Engine 5 delivers the game’s VR graphics through commercial-grade headsets.

With controllers that feature tactile haptic recoil, players use a range of weapons to mow down hordes of creatures across three missions, in solo or two-player co-op mode. SEGA noted that the controllers also include magnetic autocalibration, designed with operators in mind, meaning that no manual setup is required between plays.

House of the Dead Reawakened’s VR headset and gun-style controller hang from the attraction’s armored cable harness.

The company stated that for this experience it focused on the durability of the attraction’s hardware, particularly the head-mounted display (HMD) cable. “We looked at the most common complaints operators raise about VR hardware, and cable damage topped the list,” said Nigel Allison, Manufacturing & R&D Director at SEGA Amusements International.

According to Allison, the company worked with VR hardware OEM DPVR to develop a custom-designed, armored HMD cable harness, which it stated has been load-tested to 286lbs (130kg). “We’re confident enough in what we’ve built to back it with a full twelve-month warranty,” Allison added.

SEGA also noted that House of the Dead Reawakened has been through secret location testing. “We’re seeing players re-join the queue for a second, even third go, straight after finishing,” said Patrick Michael, Head of External Development & Partnerships at SEGA Amusements International.

House of the Dead Reawakened will make its global debut later this month at IAAPA Orlando, where attendees will be able to experience it first-hand at SEGA Amusements International’s stands S4602 and S4803.
