In General XR News

July 2, 2025 – Looking Glass, a provider of light field display technology, has announced that its 27-inch display is now shipping to customers. The company has also rolled out a suite of software updates aimed at supporting 3D content developers and creators working with its displays.

Looking Glass 27” Display Features

Originally unveiled in April 2025, the Looking Glass 27” is designed to deliver immersive, multi-user 3D experiences without the need for headsets or glasses. The device features a 5K resolution display within a 1-inch thick form factor and projects up to 12 inches of virtual depth, according to the company. It is intended for use across sectors such as education, training, research, retail, and entertainment.

Looking Glass stated that recent software developments allow the 27” display to be powered not only by GPU-enabled computers but also by iPads, which reduces the operational footprint and cuts system-level costs by approximately 60% compared to the previous model.

Looking Glass Software Updates

Alongside the hardware release, Looking Glass has introduced several software updates. For creating applications, updates include:

  • Bridge SDK: Allows developers to build or integrate custom applications using Looking Glass’s software development kit (SDK), which supports graphics frameworks including OpenGL, DirectX, and Metal. Sample for C++, C#, and Python are also available.

  • Updated Unity Plugin: Enables developers to visualize Unity scenes in the Looking Glass display and build interactive 3D applications on PC, Mac, or iOS.

Other software updates focused around showing content on the Looking Glass display include:

  • Looking Glass Studio: The updated version includes iOS support and playback for pre-rendered content from Unity, Unreal, Blender, and standard 2D media with generated depth.

  • 3D Model Viewer: Adds functionality to explode and slice views of 3D models, and view a list of submeshes that provide full insight into the components of a model (coming in July).

  • CAD Support: Expands the 3D Model Viewer’s compatibility to include CAD designs for visualization in the Looking Glass display (coming in July).

Additionally, Looking Glass stated that with these latest updates, developers will be able to extend and customize the software to meet their specific needs through several open-source plugins for Blender, WebXR, and Unreal (the latter of which will be released in July).

Looking Glass 27″ Pricing and Availability
